This aerial photograph taken of the Oakley, Knightsen, and Brentwood area shows the impact that irrigation can have on a community. Previously dry farming of grains is transformed into high-yield fruit and nut tree production. A farmer with 20 to 40 acres could sell his crop through one of the commodity marketing exchanges and economically compete anywhere in the world. (ECCHS.)

There was opportunity for the very small farmer, cultivating less than 20 acres, to prosper in Contra Costa County. Hulls surround this family, working on their August almond harvest, as they sort meats from the shells. The by-product hulls have a value as high-protein cattle feed. The family may have a cow for fresh milk and a few chickens, but they are not subsistence farmers. They raise one crop, and pray for volume and a good price.
